He was a platoon leader serving in Southeast Asia from 1968-1970 and has also commanded an infantry battalion in the VTARNG. She is currently the Assistant Director of the FDNY Counseling Unit and has been responsible for the development of post 9/11 services to Firefighters, EMS personnel and family members of the survivors and deceased. In her position for the Center, Dr. Parker focuses on crisis communication during a disaster, developing curriculum, and providing training for the public health workforce in disaster preparedness. Her research interests include disaster mental health, public health disaster preparedness, risk communication, and the relationship between global climate change and disasters. She is board certified in Preventive Medicine.

Deb is an approved instructor for ICISF and recently completed an international study on the effectiveness of CISD group process variables. Dr. Pender received recognition as an “Emerging Leader in Group Work” given by the Association for Specialists in Group Work. She co-chairs the ASGW Ethics committee. Deb is an Assistant Professor at Northern Illinois University.

Dan has served as trainer for many rural fire and EMS departments and teaches First Aid and Safety courses for school children through the Save-A-Life Foundation.

She is currently working toward certification as an ATSS Certified Trauma Responder, and toward the recognition of standard protocols for training and deploying canines for animal assisted crisis response.
